Mikaela Durfey Killed in Marana Shooting; Ex-Husband Dies Nearby, Children Rescued Unharmed by Police

The Marana community is mourning the tragic loss of 36-year-old Mikaela Durfey, whose life was taken during a devastating domestic-related incident on Monday, May 25, in the 6700 block of West Alegria Drive near Silverbell and Cortaro in Tucson, Arizona.

According to the Marana Police Department, officers were dispatched around 5 p.m. after reports of a shooting at a residence. When first responders arrived, they located Mikaela Durfey in the driveway of the home suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities later identified 37-year-old Brian Schnurr, her ex-husband, as the suspect in the shooting. Police quickly began searching for him after he fled the area in a blue Dodge Challenger. His vehicle was later located in the parking lot of a nearby business less than a mile from the residence, prompting a large law enforcement response and perimeter search.

During the response, officers safely located the couple’s two young children inside the suspect vehicle and removed them without physical harm. Officials confirmed the children were not injured and were immediately placed into protective care following the incident.

Shortly after securing the scene, officers searched a nearby desert area adjacent to the parking lot, where Schnurr was later found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have classified the case as a murder-suicide.

Investigators stated that the fatal shooting appears to be domestic-related, though they have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident. Court records indicate that Mikaela Durfey filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025, several months prior to the tragedy.

As news of her death spread, family members, friends, and members of the community expressed deep sorrow and disbelief over the sudden loss. Mikaela is being remembered by loved ones as a devoted mother and cherished presence in the lives of those who knew her. Her passing has left an overwhelming void that will be deeply felt for years to come.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that the safety of the children was a priority during the response, and praised officers for their rapid action in securing their safe recovery from the scene.

As Marana continues to process this heartbreaking incident, support has poured in for those affected. Vigils and tributes are expected as the community comes together to honor Mikaela’s life and memory.

Her story now stands as one of profound loss, as loved ones remember not how she died, but the life she lived, and the people she impacted along the way.
